11 surgical robotics companies you need to know

 Intuitive Surgical: Leading the pack

Intuitive Surgical's DaVinci

Intuitive Surgical’s DaVinci robotic surgery system

At the head of the surgical robotics race is Intuitive Surgical‘s da Vinci robot. The da Vinci is the most ubiquitous robot, with more units in operation than any other robotic systems.

The da Vinci system is designed to perform various minimally invasive surgeries, with a wealth of regulatory approvals covering a wide spectrum of surgical procedures—much greater than any of its current competitors on the market.

The da Vinci has been the subject of more than 7,000 peer-reviewed publications and studies, and is used worldwide.

Intuitive Surgical recently avoided a class-action lawsuit over the da Vinci robot after plaintiffs claimed that the robot left tiny metallic particles in the body that eventually made their way to the brain.

Company officials expect da Vinci system procedures to grow to 9% this year, down from the 15% growth seen in 2016. But the company has an R&D pipeline that should hopefully produce new products in coming years.
