Harmonic Drive to show importance of actuators at Robotics Summit & Expo

BOSTON — Robotics developers  need best-in-class components for precise, powerful, and durable robots. At the Robotics Summit & Expo here next month, Harmonic Drive LLC will be sharing its expertise in actuators, motion control, and robotics through a presentation and demonstrations.

Peabody, Mass.-based Harmonic Drive is based on the principles of inventor C. Walton Musser, and it engineers and manufactures precision servo actuators, gearheads, and gear component sets. It works with Fortune 500 companies on custom solutions, and its parts are used in a wide variety of industrial, collaborative, and service robots.

Emerging Technologies for Robotic Actuators

Brian Coyne, vice president of mechatronics engineering at Harmonic Drive, will be speaking at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5. His session on “Emerging Technologies for Robotic Actuators” is part of the Technologies, Tools, and Platforms track at the Robotics Summit.

Coyne has degrees in mechanical engineering from Tufts University and spent 15 years at Assembly and Automation Technology before joining Harmonic Drive in 2014. He developed Harmonic’s line of actuators with 480VAC and IP65 rating and is working on new mini-actuators.

Coyne will explain why today’s robot designs put greater demands on actuator functionality. He will address the challenge of maintaining torque density and package size while adding capabilities such as position sensing and integrated servo drives. In addition, Coyne will examine how actuator design can be an enabler for robot developers.

On the expo floor, Harmonic Drive will be demonstrating its market-leading components in the Meca500 from Mecademic Inc. The Meca500 is the world’s smallest industrial robot, according to Mecademic.

The demo will enable visitors to get a first-hand experience of the torque and positional accuracy of Harmonic’s gearheads.

Networking opportunities

As the founding sponsor of the Robotics Summit & Expo, Harmonic Drive is supporting the refreshments on the show floor at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5. Attendees will be able to compare notes with their peers, meet speakers and exhibitors, and advance their careers.

Harmonic Drive is also sponsoring BotMix, a fun gathering from 6:00 p.m. onward in the Harborview Ballroom that will include food, drink, robots, and entertainment.

Robotics Summit & Expo 2019 will be on June 5-6 at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston. The global event is produced by WTWH Media LLC, the parent organization of The Robot Report, and it features keynotes by technology leaders, sessions and panels in four tracks, and 70+ exhibitors. The conference and exposition are designed to help engineers learn about the latest tools to advance the state of commercial robotics products and services.
