Inside Canada’s robotics ecosystem, world’s spookiest robots, Miso’s restaurant robots

By Eugene Demaitre | October 28, 2020

Welcome to Episode 22 of The Robot Report Podcast, which brings conversations with robotics innovators straight to you. Join us each week for discussions with leading roboticists, innovative robotics companies, and other key members of the robotics community.

This week, we chat with Mike Tremblay, president and CEO of Invest Ottawa, the lead development agency for Canada’s capital. Tremblay talks about the launch of Area X.O, a research and development facility for technologies including robots, drones, and autonomous vehicles. We also discuss how Canada is focusing on advanced technologies in its economic policies.

While we’re both big supporters of commercial robotics, fellow editor Steve Crowe and I also discuss some of the creepiest and scariest robots in time for Halloween. We talk about recent robots from fiction and reality and the lessons for developers. We also talk about a building that was moved on robotic legs (see show notes below).

In addition, I speak with returning guest Buck Jordan, president and chairman of Miso Robotics, about expanding deployments of the Flippy Robot-on-a-Rail system to more White Castle fast-food restaurants. Jordan also explains how Miso is building a lead in food-preparation robots and the potential for more robots in kitchens.
