Usually the story goes like this: someone, irritated by a neighbor flying a drone, grabs a gun and shoots the drone out of the air. The unarmed drone never had a chance.

Well, the tables have turned.

The YouTube video above shows “a homemade multirotor with a semiautomatic handgun mounted on it.” The 27-inch drone, which appears to be in a wooded area, fires the gun four times.

After each shot, the drone is pushed back in the air due to the gun’s recoil. The drone compensates for the force by adjusting its height and position after each shot.

So who built this drone? The Verge has more on who the DIYer behind this drone could be:

“Howgwit, the YouTube user who uploaded the recent 14-second clip, also references another video showing a CGI quadcopter with a mounted machine gun on his Google+ account, commenting: “Too bad it’s fake… though I have a real one in my channel?.” Hogwit appears to be Austin Haughwout, a US drone hobbyist who was involved in a drone-rage incident last year. While flying a video-equipped drone at a beach, Haughwout got into a confrontation with a woman, Andrea Mears, who felt she was in danger from the craft. Footage of the incident went viral, and Mears was charged with third-degree assault before being granted probation.”

Various media outlets have been unsuccessful at verifying whether the footage is real, but if it is, this drone is illegal based on regulations from the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA).

I’m a fan of DIY drones, especially those modeled after Star Wars aircraft, but this drone might be pushing the limit.
