Indy Autonomous Challenge Pushed Boundaries of Autonomous Vehicle Speed and Control

Organization: Indy Autonomous Challenge
Country: USA
Website: www.indyautonomouschallenge.com
Year Founded: 2019
Number of Employees: 1-10

The inaugural autonomous vehicle racing challenge thrilled race fans worldwide and set new world speed records for autonomous race vehicles

Description:
RBRlogo In October 2021, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), the world' first racing competition featuring full-scale, autonomous racecars. A second competition was held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in January 2022. At the IMS event, a new IMS track lap record for AV’s was set at 135-plus MPH. At the Las Vegas event, a new autonomous passing speed record was set at 175-plus MPH. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Energy Systems Network (ESN), and the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP) worked collaboratively to develop the Indy Autonomous Challenge. Engineering teams from over 21 international universities participated in the event, which was developed to act as a test bed for the development of advanced autonomous driving algorithms. The race, which featured a $1 million grand prize, was won by TUM Autonomous Motorsport from the Technische Universität München (TUM).

Analysis:
The Indy Autonomous Challenge was modeled on the DARPA Grand Challenge, an off-road autonomous vehicle competition first run in 2004 in the desert southwest of the US. The Grand Challenge, which awarded cash prizes to the winners, accelerated autonomous vehicle (AV) innovation, and gave birth to a new generation of autonomous vehicle (AV) industry leaders. The IAC is the successor to the DARPA Grand Challenge, and similarly it will act as an incubator for the next generation of AV leaders and innovators. - Mike Oitzman
