DJI Phantom 3 Standard Camera Drone Simplifies Aerial Videography

By Steve Crowe | August 5, 2015

DJI has introduced the Phantom 3 Standard camera drone, an entry-level quadcopter designed for beginners looking to capture aerial footage.

The DJI Phantom 3 Standard comes with a built-in HD video camera that can capture 2.7k HD video at 30fps with a 94-degree lens. If you’re looking to take photographs, it will capture 12-megapixel stills in RAW or PNG formats. A live video feed gives you a 720p HD real-time view of what the drone sees on your mobile device.

It features a flight time of 25 minutes and a follow mode that captures images as you move.

DJI says the Phantom 3 Standard is designed to make the flying experience easier. To do that, the drone will send its position to a live GPS map on your mobile device. Since the Phantom 3 Standard knows where it is and where you are, it can calculate how much longer it can continue flying and automatically come home and land when needed.

You can also set height and distance limits to keep all flights within a safe area, and away from wildfires and airports. The Phantom 3 Standard will automatically stop and stay inside of your chosen limits as you fly.

DJI’s Phantom 3 Standard drone is available to buy today for $799 (£649 / € 919).

New DJI Go App

The Phantom 3 Standard was released on the heels of DJI’s new GO App for iOS and eventually Android. DJI GO replaces the existing Pilot app, and brings faster video sharing, editing tools, and an explore tab for seeing what others have recorded.

DJI GO’s Director, a built-in video editor, allows you to choose the best moments from your flights and build a complete video with music, text, and more. Pre-designed templates are built into Director, enabling you to quickly create a video that fits your style. With just a few taps, you have a professional-quality movie of your flight on hand, ready to be shared.

DJI Go also includes a flight simulator to practice flying and perfect your skills. Other features include a flight log to review all of your past flights, with the date and time, duration, and a preview of the photos and videos you took, as well as user manuals, tutorial videos, and more to help you get the best flight experience.
