Zoox Inc. this week announced that it is starting street-mapping operations in Los Angeles as the first step to deploying its robotaxis in the coming years.
The Foster City, Calif.-based company is expanding its autonomous vehicle testing, making Los Angeles the sixth city following Miami and Austin. The Zoox test fleet, already operational in locations such as San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Seattle.
Zoox offered robotaxi rides at CES 2025 in January, and it voluntarily recalled software for 258 vehicles in March.
Consistent with a “no surprises” approach, the company said it collaborates with local and state authorities before deploying retrofitted vehicles with safety drivers. Zoox said its strategic deployment in LA will help it refine its technology by navigating the city’s unique traffic conditions and gaining valuable insights.
Zoox to being with mapping process in Los Angeles
Zoox plans to soon begin mapping missions in Los Angeles, paving the way for autonomous trials later this summer. This initial mapping phase is a crucial step in preparation for autonomous trials, which the company said it expects to begin later this summer.
The process starts with manual mapping, followed by autonomous driving within a controlled geofence. This method ensures that the self-driving systems can adapt to local challenges before expanding operations.
Los Angeles, known for its complex traffic and high car reliance, offers an ideal environment for testing and improving any ride-hailing services, according to Zoox.
The company asserted that its service will eventually offer residents a more efficient commuting option, potentially freeing up time for leisure and productivity. Zoox encouraged local residents to be aware of its test vehicles on the roads and said it is hiring at zoox.com/careers.
