The company said the Nuro Driver will eventually enable up to Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles in addition to goods delivery.

Nuro, an autonomous vehicle delivery company with deployments in California and Texas, laid off about 300 employees on Friday. 

This partnership has been a long time coming. Nuro and Uber were reportedly in negotiations back in 2019, but things never panned out until now.

Nuro said it adjusted its focus in Arizona to concentrate more on tele-operations.

Like R1 and R2, Nuro is completely passengerless and made for deliveries, but its 500 lb capacity is double what R2 can carry.

Today, Nuro announced it will be delivering with 7-Eleven in Mountain View, California, and Waymo announced its grocery delivery service will launch in 2022.

Nuro has raised $2.1 billion since it was founded in 2016. The company is reportedly now worth $8.6 billion.

The pilot, which will start in April 2021, marks Nuro’s expansion into parcel logistics and allows FedEx to explore various use cases for on-road autonomous vehicle logistics.
