SS Innovations International, Inc., today announced its Chairman of the Board and CEO, Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, M.D., completed an intercontinental robotic cardiac telesurgery. Dr. Srivastava performed the surgery on July 19, 2025, using the company’s SSi Mantra 3 surgical robotic system.

The robot carried out the surgery, a robotic atrial septal defect closure, in an operating room at the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) in Indore, India. Meanwhile, 4,000 miles away, Dr. Srivastava teleoperated the robot. He did so at the global headquarters of the Institute of Research Against Digestive Cancer (IRCAD) in Strasbourg, France. The surgery happened during the Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS) Annual Meeting.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to Dr. Vipul Patel, M.D., F.A.C.S., Chairman of the Society of Robotic Surgery for this opportunity at the SRS 2025 Conference, Dr. Mohit Bhandari, the IRCAD India team, and the entire SS Innovations team whose dedication and innovation made the world’s first intercontinental robotic cardiac telesurgery possible,” Dr. Srivastava said. “This historic achievement not only demonstrates the advanced capabilities of our SSi Mantra 3 surgical robotic system but also further paves the way for redefining and democratizing global delivery of complex cardiac care, especially in regions with limited access to surgical expertise.”

Patient-side support in Indore was coordinated by:

  • Dr. Lalit Malik, Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Manipal Hospital, Jaipur
  • Dr. Ram Krishna Shukla, Cardiologist, SAIMS, Indore
  • Dr. Bipin Arya, Anesthesiologist, SAIMS, Indore
  • The SS Innovations and SAIMS teams

SS Innovations said the team completed the surgery without any technical issues and with imperceptible latency, precision, and a high degree of robotic control.

SS Innovations builds on telesurgery momentum

Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based SS Innovations said it has developed systems to make robotic surgery affordable and accessible to a larger segment of the global population. The company’s product range includes its proprietary SSi Mantra and its comprehensive suite of SSi Mudra instruments.

The company has made progress in the last year in advancing its teleoperation capabilities. To date, 35 telesurgeries, including 10 cardiac procedures, and a total of 250 cardiac procedures have been completed utilizing the SSi Mantra surgical robotic system.

SS Innovations also recently announced it completed a robotic telesurgery for weight loss using the SSi Mantra 3. This bariatric telesurgery bridged a distance of 560 miles between SS Innovations’ headquarters in Gurugram, India, and the Mohak Bariatric and Robotic Surgery Centre in Indore, India.

The procedures involved two One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) surgeries. This is an advanced form of bariatric surgery that reduces stomach size and reroutes the digestive tract to support long-term weight loss and improve metabolic health.

Last week, Intuitive Surgical remotely connected two surgeons to perform a transatlantic demo between Georgia and France, also at the SRS conference. The distance between them spanned more than 4,000 miles. Together, using a dual-console da Vinci 5 system, two surgeons performed a telesurgery procedure on an advanced tissue model. Intuitive developed the model to replicate the behavior of live tissue.

Iman Jeddi, senior VP and GM of Intuitive’s Multiport Platform, will be delivering the closing keynote at RoboBusiness, which takes place Oct. 15-16 in Santa Clara, Calif., and is produced by The Robot Report. The keynote “Redefining the Future of Surgical Robotics” offers a rare look inside the redesign and launch of the da Vinci 5, Intuitive’s next-generation surgical robotics system.

In October 2024, MicroPort completed six robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy procedures using its MedBot surgical robot in Angola. Two of the surgeries were performed remotely. This marks the first telesurgery procedures in sub-Saharan Africa using the Toumai system’s capabilities, MicroPort said.

Additionally, Jim Hirsch, QNX’s vice president of the North American and EMEA general embedded market (GEM), recently told The Robot Report that robotic telesurgery was a particular interest for the company.
