TuSimple is a Chinese-based company founded in 2015 that set up a research and test center in Tucson, Ariz. in 2017. It raised $55 million in November 2017 and is also backed by NVIDIA.
TuSimple already has some successful long-distance, highway testing under its belt. It completed a 200-mile, Level 4 test drive in July 2017 from San Diego to Yuma. It’s currently planning a 120-mile test from Tucson to Phoenix, Arizona later in 2018.
Rather than sell its systems, TuSimple will offer semi-automated hauling services. TuSimple’s system mainly uses advanced camera technology to recognize roadways and obstacles. The company creates high-resolution maps of its routes with cars that are outfitted with Lidar, cameras and other sensors.
