Wieland Electric Inc. this week announced that its samos PRO MOTION Controller was named the Gold winner in the Control Systems category of the Plant Engineering 2025 Product of the Year awards program. Plant Engineering is a sibling site to The Robot Report.

According to Wieland Electric, the award recognizes its controller’s innovation, performance, and contribution to advancing industrial automation and safety. Designed for high-performance motion control and functional safety, the samos PRO MOTION offers real-time capabilities for applications including robotics, packaging, and material handling systems, said the Bamberg, Germany-based company.

“The samos PRO MOTION exemplifies our commitment to developing intuitive, integrated solutions that meet the evolving needs of industrial automation,” stated Diego Arias, product manager for automation at Wieland Electric Americas. “This recognition validates our vision of promoting functional safety in the industrial space.”

samos PRO MOTION designed to be compact, easy to program

Wieland said samos PRO MOTION is an “all-in-one” safety controller that integrates advanced motion functionality with intuitive programming via the license-free samos PLAN6 software. Equipped with six TÜV-certified motion function blocks, the controller reduces the need for additional modules by up to 60%, freeing up valuable space in the control cabinet compared with conventional systems, the company claimed.

The compact controller supports safe standstill monitoring, even on vertical and slow-moving axes, noted Wieland. The samos PRO Motion also features a toolbox designed to mitigate both macro and micro vibrations, ensuring greater stability and precision in motion-critical applications.

In addition, the controller is integrated with industrial Ethernet protocols including Profinet I/O, Ethernet IP, and Modbus TCP. It can withstand temperatures from -25°C to +65°C (-13°F to 149°F). The samos PRO has a compact housing with 45 mm (1.7 in.) width, plus 16 safe inputs, four safe outputs, and four safe I/Os that can be programmed as safe inputs or outputs.

“Wieland Electric’s compact samos PRO MOTION safety controller integrates motion monitoring in its base module, offering safe standstill, speed, direction and position monitoring,” wrote Plant Engineering in its e-book on the award winners. “The controller offers increased safety through redundancy and shaft break detection.”
