Open Robotics’ RoMi-H Simplifies Control of Heterogeneous Fleets

RoMi-H is an open, integrated and efficient way to deploying heterogeneous robot fleets.

Description:
Robotic Middleware for Healthcare (RoMi-H) is an open-source system built on ROS 2 and simulated using Gazebo. It creates uniform communication and monitoring across heterogeneous fleets of robots, sensors and enterprise information systems. Open Robotics, the company behind ROS, recently deployed RoMi-H at Changi General Hospital in Singapore, in partnership with Singapore’s Centre for Healthcare Assistive and Robotics Technology (CHART), IHiS, Hope Technik, GovTech and more.

RoMi-H uses standardized communication protocols for infrastructure, environments and automation where robots are deployed to optimize the use of critical resources (i.e. robots, li fts, doors, passageways, etc). It adds intelligence to the system through resource allocation and by preventing conflicts over shared resources

Analysis:
As more robotics and automation technologies are introduced, interoperability needs to be front and center for every manufacturer, systems integrator, and end user. This is discussed a lot, and there are several groups discussing how to standardize this need. But Open Robotics’ RoMi-H has already applied this to a real-world robot fleet.

Companies need a unified approach to command and control all the robots in a facility, whether it be a hospital, warehouse or manufacturing facility. They need a reliable way to develop and test multi-vendor systems in so ware simulation prior to deployment. RoMi-H is a significant step in the right direction, encouraging an open, integrated and efficient approach to developing and deploying heterogeneous robot fleet. – Steve Crowe
