Stretch RE1 is a novel, low-cost approach to mobile manipulation.

Description:
After three-plus years in stealth mode, Martinez, Calif.-based Hello Robot launched its Stretch RE1 mobile manipulator in July 2020. Designed primarily as a research platform, Stretch weighs less than 55 lb, offers a payload capacity of more than 3.3 lb, 3D perception, a compliant gripper, open-source so ware and much more.

A sleek, carbon-fiber telescoping arm can reach up 43.3 inches high and extends outward 20.5 inches, enabling the robot to grasp items on a variety of surfaces. Stretch RE1 also features torque sensing in all its joints to detect contact, a laser range finder, an onboard computer, and differential two-wheel drive. The robot has various mount points and expansion ports that allow researchers to extend the robot with their own hardware.

Analysis:
Led by Aaron Edsinger and Charlie Kemp, Hello Robot combines decades of experience in industry and academia. Stretch RE1 is a novel, low-cost approach to mobile manipulation. At $17,950, Stretch costs a fraction of what other mobile manipulators sell for without compromising its performance. The PR2, for example, cost upwards of $400,000 when it was the state-of-the-art mobile manipulator 10-plus years ago.

Stretch is a major step towards democratizing mobile manipulation technology. On top of being capable, lightweight and open-source, Stretch ships with out-of-the-box teleoperation and demos of autonomous functionality like path planning and object grasping, facilitating prototyping of new applications. – Steve Crowe
