BMW Group Launches IDEALworks, Helping Itself and Becoming an AMR Player

Organization: BMW / IDEALworks
Country: Germany
Website: https://idealworks.com
Year Founded: 2020
Number of Employees: 34

The IDEALworks founding and STR commercialization demonstrates business leadership at multiple levels.

Description:
In 2020 the BMW Group launched a new, wholly-owned, Munich based subsidiary named IDEALworks, with the “IDEAL” standing for Industry-Driven Engineering for Autonomous Logistics. IDEALworks was formed from BMWs Logistics innovation team, which during the previous five years had developed the Smart Transport Robot STR (in conjunction with the Fraunhofer Institute and other technology partners such as NVIDIA), an intelligent autonomous mobile robot (AMR) optimized for intralogistics work in BMW’s automotive factories. The STRs – now renamed iw.hub - had been in use at several BMW production sites prior to the founding of IDEALworks, but in 2020, the iw.hub was made commercially available to companies outside of BMW.

Analysis:
The IDEALworks founding and iw.hub commercialization demonstrates business leadership at multiple levels. First, BMW leveraged the company’s domain expertise in logistics to develop a solution optimized for automotive manufacturing (BMW officials have indicated that 3rd party AMR solutions were lacking). By spinning off IDEALworks and commercializing the iw.hub, BMW’s AMR skunkworks goes from being a revenue sink to a revenue source in the very hot AMR market. IDEALworks intends to broaden its AMR offerings targeting applications outside of logistics and possibly industries outside of automotive. This opens up further opportunities for continued growth and systems development, as well as the formation of new partnerships. All the while, IDEALworks benefits from its relationship to mother company BMW Group, which as a global multinational business and will continue to be a driver for robotics innovation and source for in-house proof-of-concepts and testing. – Dan Kara
