Nimble moves to cloud-based PTC development tools for logistics robots

A developer of robots for logistics is moving to the cloud, said PTC Inc. this week. Nimble is replacing its legacy computer-aided design (CAD), product data management (PDM), product lifecycle management (PLM), and quality management system (QMS) tools with PTC’s cloud-native Onshape CAD and PDM platform and cloud-native Arena PLM and QMS platform.

Nimble said it chose to fully transition from its file-based tools in favor of connected, cloud-native systems to streamline collaboration, reduce latency, and improve reliability across teams. The developer of logistics automation made the decision less than 60 days after its initial evaluation, PTC said.

“With Onshape and Arena, we now have a connected, cloud-native development process that eliminates the bottlenecks we faced with file-based tools,” stated Simon Kalouche, founder and CEO of Nimble. “This is a critical step as we scale manufacturing and R&D for our super-humanoid mobile manipulator robots to meet the growing demand for faster, more cost-effective logistics.”

Onshape, Arena support digitalization, says PTC

PTC is a Boston-based global software company. It aims to enable manufacturers and product companies to digitally transform how they design, manufacture, and service products.

“Nimble’s adoption of Onshape and Arena underscores a notable trend in the industry where leaders are replacing file-based tools with connected, cloud-native platforms,” said David Katzman, general manager of Onshape and Arena at PTC. “Onshape and Arena are key enablers of this change, allowing teams to improve workflows, increase agility, and scale efficiently.”

The company said its OnShape cloud-native product development platform delivers a more agile and collaborative experience with CAD, simulation, built-in PDM, and connected PLM. With Onshape, PTC claimed that users can innovate quickly while simultaneously or asynchronously collaborating with other stakeholders on any web-connected device.

Arena is intended to streamline product development, according to PTC. It said the platform brings product information, people, and processes into a single cloud-based system to speed new product development and introduction and keep everyone on the same page.

Nimble builds fulfillment robots, partners with FedEx

Founded in 2017, Nimble said it builds fully autonomous fulfillment centers. The San Francisco-based company claimed that its proprietary “general-purpose” robot can perform core warehouse tasks including storage and retrieval, picking, packing, and sorting.

Nimble asserted that its system will result in warehouses that are simpler, more reliable, and easier to install and scale.

In October, the company raised $106 million in Series C funding, led by FedEx. As part of its strategic alliance, FedEx has entered into a commercial agreement to use Nimble’s technology and a fully autonomous third-party logistics (3PL) model.
