Manufacturers received some protections, says NEMA, in its recent praise for the new, stronger consumer product safety legislation that Congress passed. After a year’s effort in which NEMA was actively engaged, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, prior to adjourning for the summer district work period, overwhelmingly approved legislation (H.R. 4040) to reauthorize and enhance the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
NEMA encouraged Congress not to include a provision that would have imposed burdensome product disclosure requirements on manufacturers and to ensure that proprietary business information is protected from public release; Congress agreed on both points. NEMA partnered with industry allies to ensure general CPSC safety standards continue to preempt state rules and that the provisions will discourage inconsistent state laws and regulations.
