Johnson & Johnson MedTech launches Dualto generator that will work with Ottava surgical robot

As with other robotics applications, there is always room for improvement in power and usability for surgical systems. Johnson & Johnson MedTech this week announced that it has launched its FDA-cleared Dualto energy system.

Dualto is a surgical system that combines multiple energy modalities into an integrated platform for use across open and minimally invasive surgeries. J&J designed it to work with its Polyphonic Fleet software application for device management.

The company also plans for Dualto to be used with its highly anticipated Ottava surgical robot. J&J designed Dualto to provide the option of powering monopolar, bipolar, ultrasonic, and advanced bipolar instruments. Those include the Harmonic and Enseal devices, all powered through a single, consolidated system.

The system’s modular design and flexible architecture take up nearly half (46%) of the footprint of separate generators, said the medtech giant.

Design incorporates advances for surgeons

Dualto is the first and only surgical energy system to be made available in double configuration, claimed Johnson & Johnson MedTech. This enables two surgeons to work in a complex procedure and activate simultaneous energy from one unit.

“The Dualto energy system represents a significant advancement in human-centric design, delivering a fully connected solution that simplifies surgical energy and enhances efficiencies in the OR,” said Hani Abouhalka, company group chair for surgery at J&J.

“Johnson & Johnson MedTech has been a trusted partner in surgery for over a century, and we are leveraging clinical insights to tailor the design of our technologies to meet the needs of surgeons and clinical teams,” he said. “Dualto supports a more flexible and digitally connected OR ecosystem for the future of surgical care.”

Dualto uses proprietary adaptive tissue technology to enhance the performance of the Harmonic and Enseal devices. Adaptive tissue technology responds intelligently to changing tissue conditions and regulates energy delivery. It delivers improved temperature management and provides tone changes and user signals for more precise energy delivery, explained J&J.

The company said its streamlined operating room setup with Dualto could help minimize stress levels for surgeons and clinical teams. The system prioritizes usability with an instinctive touchscreen interface with clear visual and auditory cues. It offers real-time feedback and streamlined workflows with faster setup and adjustments through custom settings.

Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s Polyphonic Fleet software application helps hospitals oversee capital equipment. The application can inform the status of Dualto for software upgrades and routine maintenance needs.

The company said it plans to make Dualto and Polyphonic Fleet available to select hospital sites in select markets “soon.” Ottava remains under development and investigational review.

“Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s Polyphonic ecosystem will enable new experiences across our portfolio of medical devices, robotics, and software solutions,” said Shan Jegatheeswaran, vice president for digital at J&J. “Dualto combines advanced energy technology with Polyphonic Fleet’s ecosystem to provide remote support. We are excited to empower healthcare teams with capabilities for more connected OR devices.”

J&J plans to showcase the system at the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Global Surgical Conference & Expo in Boston next month.
