It hasn’t been a good day for self-driving cars. First you had MIT professor and historian David Mindell say cars should never be fully driverless. Now Jay Leno, former host of “The Tonight Show” and a car aficionado, has reiterated Mindell’s thoughts.
Leno spoke about self-driving cars as part of his new CNBC show, “Jay Leno’s Garage,” and he equates self-driving cars to how airplanes fly.
“Do you think the pilot really flies the plane? He just sits in a chair and watches dials and monitors. He’ll participate in the landing and everything else, but for the most part airplanes are self-driving.”
Leno continues, “the idea of you jumping in the back seat with a bottle of scotch in the car driving you from bar to bar, that’s not really going to happen. But that’s what people think.”
Watch the video below and vote in our poll: do you think cars should be fully autonomous? Sure the results will be skewed as this is a robotics site, but there certainly are people on the other side of the spectrum.
