Among the enabling technologies expanding the range of applications for robots and drones are advances in computer vision. Developers of commercial robotics can learn about the latest in machine vision from industry leader Intel Corp. at next week’s Robotics Summit & Expo in Boston.

Learn how tracking can speed robotics development

Jim Radford, principal SLAM engineer at Intel, will discuss how to “Accelerate Robotics Development With High-Precision, Low-Power Tracking” at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5.

Radford is the lead developer on the team responsible for the new Intel RealSense Tracking Camera T265. He has a Ph.D. in robotics from Caltech, and he previously co-founded the Golem Group, an independent team that competed in DARPA’s autonomous driving grand challenges.

In his session, Radford will discuss how depth-sensing cameras can provide robots accurate 3D perception of their environments in real time. This enables them to navigate, react to changes, and manipulate objects in ways that approach or surpass human performance.

Radford will also explain how the latest technologies, such as Intel’s recently released RealSense Tracking Camera T265, can perform real-time simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) on the device itself. Robots and drones can create a map of their environments and always know how they are positioned and oriented within it.

In addition, Radford will describe the device’s technical specifications, sample software, and example applications. He will illustrate how the tracking technology can integrate with Intel RealSense Depth Cameras for more powerful applications.

About the Robotics Summit & Expo

Robotics Summit & Expo 2019 will be on June 5-6 at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston. The global event is produced by WTWH Media LLC, the parent organization of The Robot Report, and it features keynotes by technology leaders, sessions and panels in four tracks, and 70+ exhibitors. The conference and exposition are designed to help engineers learn about the latest tools to advance the state of commercial robotics products and services.

The Robotics Summit & Expo is co-located with the MassRobotics Robotics Engineering Career Fair, DeviceTalks Boston, and the Future of Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering workshop. In addition, Amazon Web Services is offering its free AWS RoboMaker Immersion Day on June 4 leading into the summit.

Register now to attend the Robotics Summit & Expo, and discounts are available to academics and association members.
