HAHN Group acquires integrator DAHL Automation

By Steve Crowe | April 7, 2020

HAHN Group, the German automation firm that acquired the assets of Rethink Robotics in 2018, has acquired DAHL Automation, a German robotics integrator. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

HAHN said the acquisition, which is effective March 27, will expand its presence in intralogistics and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). HAHN Robotics, a division of HAHN Group, already works with Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR), a leading manufacturer of AMRs. Founded 10-plus years ago, DAHL has 30 employees at its headquarters in Meinerzhagen and currently works with the following mobile robotics manufacturers:

  • MiR
  • Nipper, which makes a compact automated guided vehicle for internal pallet transportation.
  • Robotize – another Danish manufacturer mobile robots for internal pallet transportation

DAHL also focuses on collaborative robot arms. It claims to be the “first contractual partner of Universal Robots in Germany.”

“DAHL Automation is a pioneer in the field of collaborative robotics and has established itself with well- known customers, providing innovative automation solutions. The company’s its expertise fits perfectly into the HAHN Group portfolio,” said Thomas Hähn, founder and CEO of the HAHN Group. “With the solutions from DAHL Automation, harmonious teams of people and robots can be created in the long term. This ensures better production conditions and offers specialists the opportunity to develop their full potential in demanding areas of activity.”

Detlev Dahl, Founder and Managing Director of DAHL Automation, will continue to lead the company. “We are delighted to be joining the HAHN Group as a strong, long-term partner,” explains Dahl. “The combination of international orientation and proximity to the customer is very promising for us. We look forward to expanding our range of services together with the sister companies in the HAHN Group, as well as opening up new industries and markets.”

Rethink Robotics GmbH is another division of the HAHN Group. It recently introduced the Sawyer Black Edition collaborative robot, which is an updated version of the famous Sawyer cobot. Rethink Robotics GmbH said it addressed some of Sawyer’s design challenges by using “higher-quality” components, making it “significantly” more reliable, more durable, and quieter. Sawyer Black Edition was designed for processes such as assembly, loading and unloading, circuit board testing, metal fabrication, injection molding, and packaging.

In November 2019, HAHN Group has acquired REI Automation, a South Carolina-based industrial automation integrator. REI Automation, which focuses heavily on the medical, electronics and consumer goods industries, strengthened HAHN Group’s Assembly & Test Division. REI Automation has generated about $25 million in revenue since 2015.
