GrayMatter to share 5 keys to deploying AI-powered robots in manufacturing

By The Robot Report Staff | August 14, 2025

A promo image for S.K. Gupta, chief scientist at GrayMatter Robotics, who will speak at RoboBusiness. Robotics and artificial intelligence can dramatically improve manufacturing productivity, quality, throughput, and cost efficiency. Yet many companies struggle to move from pilot projects to full deployment. Success requires more than just good tech — it demands strategic planning, a clear understanding of challenges, and strong internal advocacy, according to GrayMatter Robotics.

At RoboBusiness 2025, Dr. Satyandra K. Gupta, the co-founder and chief scientist of GrayMatter, will outline five key strategies for successful automation deployment. He will discuss the importance of having an automation champion, optimizing full workflows, and redesigning processes to use robots’ unique strengths rather than mimic human actions.

Gupta will also cover how to calculate return on investment (ROI) beyond labor savings and why workforce readiness is critical to long-term success. He holds a Smith International Professorship in the Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California and serves as the founding director of the USC Viterbi Center for Advanced Manufacturing.

GrayMatter Robotics is a two-time RBR50 Robotics Innovation Award honoree for its Scan&Sand technology. The AI-powered system scans an object and sands it with the push of a button. The company created the system for high-mix manufacturing, where there is a great variety in the shape and size of pieces that need to be sanded. The company said its technology can handle complex geometries with ease.

RoboBusiness will be on Oct. 15 at 16 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Gupta will give his talk on the second day of the show at noon.

RoboBusiness is the premier event for developers and suppliers of commercial robots. The event is produced by WTWH Media, which also produces The Robot Report, Automated Warehouse, and the Robotics Summit & Expo.

The Physical AI Forum, new for 2025, is a track that will include sessions on the following topics:

  • How Multi-Model Decision Agents Improve Performance, Safety, and Scale
  • How AI Enhances ABB’s Robot Performance
  • The Generalization Gap: Why Physical AI Needs Smarter Data Curation

This year’s conference will also feature more than 60 speakers, a startup workshop, the annual Pitchfire competition, and numerous networking opportunities. Over 100 exhibitors on the show floor will showcase their latest enabling technologies, products, and services to help solve your robotics development challenges.

RoboBusiness will be co-located with DeviceTalks West, the premier industry event for medical technology professionals. Both events attract engineering and business professionals from a broad range of healthcare and medical technology backgrounds.

Registration is now open for RoboBusiness 2025.
