German postal officials are testing a robot to assist mail carriers in making their deliveries.
The technology, called PostBot, is undergoing a six-week pilot program in the German town of Bad Hersfeld that’s southeast of Bonn. Carriers, who will initially just use the robots for delivery between the city administrative offices, are eventually expected to employ the technology for conventional delivery routes.
The robot, developed by France-based Effidence SAS, are capable of carrying up to 330 pounds and track the movements of the letter carrier. PostBots are designed to automatically follow carriers making deliveries to reduce workloads for carriers and keep their hands free, according to SlashGear.
Bad Hersfeld is not unfamiliar territory for robotics. The city hosts two Amazon.com fulfillment centers that rely heavily on the latest in robotic technology.
