The DJI Phantom 4 drone was introduced today, and it’s the easiest and safest drone DJI has produced to date.
Here are the major improvements in the DJI Phantom 4 drone. The battery life is 28 minutes, which is the longest flight time for any Phantom drone to date. There’s a Sport Mode, for those who want to get a taste of drone racing, that allows the DJI Phantom 4 drone to top out at 45 MPH. The top speed on the previous Phantom drones was 37 MPH.
But perhaps most impressive, however, is the computer vision the DJI Phantom 4 drone uses to avoid obstacles in its path (anywhere between 2.3 to 49 feet). It uses five cameras – two on the front and two on the bottom, plus the main 4K camera – to capture images that are run through computer vision software to reconstruct a 3D model of its environment and intelligently navigate. DJI says even when flying at full speed, the Phantom 4 will slow down and hover in place, avoiding the obstacles in front of it.
Starting March 1st the Phantom 4 will be available for purchase on DJI.com and Apple.com. On March 15th, it will be available in-store at DJI’s flagship store in Shenzen, and as the first drone prominently featured in Apple Stores around the world.
