Editors note: Matthew Wicks, Director of Robotics at Celestica, is presenting at our Robotics Summit & Expo, which takes place May 10-11 in Boston. His talk, called “Design, Engineering and Manufacturing Services Solutions for Robotics Solution Providers,” will discuss how robotics OEMs and robotic systems providers are increasingly partnering with organizations that offer design, engineering and manufacturing services to support the development and production of their robotic products.

Urbx Logistics announced it has selected Celestica to provide the engineering and manufacturing of the Urbx Curbside solution as Urbx begins the process of building and installing curbside delivery solutions in North America.

Celestica brings more than 25 years of experience engineering, building and installing robotics and automation solutions. The company is a well established OEM manufacturer.

“We need to ensure we meet our customers’ requirements at the scale and quality that the market demands and our partnership with Celestica will enable us to do just that,” said Lincoln Cavalieri, CEO of Urbx. “With increasing demand from consumers to receive grocery and retail items immediately, and often via home-delivery, partnering with Celestica will enable us to meet the high demand for the Urbx system throughout metropolitan areas around the world.”

The Urbx system leverages robotics and automation to bring a unique last-mile eCommerce fulfillment solution to market. The Urbx vertical configuration is designed to minimize floor space through the implementation of a large vertical storage array.

Product inventory is stored and retrieved via dual robotic tote handlers that operate within the vertical automated storage and retrieval storage (ASRS) array.

The Urbx solution is expected to transform how grocery chains, factories, retailers and distribution centers achieve on-demand order fulfillment. The company is expecting to go live with retailers later this year.

“We will serve as an extension of Urbx’s team to accelerate the development and delivery of its innovative last mile e-commerce fulfillment system to their global customers,” said Matthew Wicks, Director of Robotics, Celestica. “Urbx will leverage our global supply chain network, engineering expertise and full-scale production capabilities to help bring their next-gen robotics solutions to life.”
