Arbe raises $32M to bring high-res radar for autonomous vehicles to market

By The Robot Report Staff | December 17, 2019

TEL AVIV, Israel — Arbe Robotics Ltd. today announced that it has closed a $32 million Series B funding round. The company, which has developed a chipset for 4D imaging radar, plans to use the investment to move to full production of its product, which it said can generate images 100 times more detailed than anything else currently available.

A team of semiconductor engineers, radar specialists, and data scientists founded Arbe in 2015. The company has offices in Israel, the U.S., and China.

Self-driving cars to rely on radar rather than lidar

The company said its technology produces detailed images. It can also separate, identify, and track objects in high resolution in both azimuth and elevation in a long range and a wide field of view. With post-processing using artificial intelligence and and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), Arbe said, its system is capable of operating in any weather or lighting environment.

The company also claimed that its technology eliminates false alarms, processes large amounts of data in real time, and mitigates mutual radar interference. As a result, Arbe said, its 4D radar systems can support more accurate and safer decision-making for all levels of autonomous driving.

“Arbe’s revolutionary technology and its highly skilled team have made impressive strides in the industry,” said Yair Shamir, managing partner at Catalyst CEL Fund, an investor in the Series B round. “We are very pleased to support their progress, and we foresee an exciting market opportunity ahead.”

Growing Arbe

The company said it has secured $55 million so far from investors including Canaan Partners Israel, iAngels, 360 Capital Partners, O.G. Tech Ventures, Catalyst CEL, AI Alliance, BAIC Capital, MissionBlue Capital, and OurCrowd.

Arbe said it plans to expand its team to support global automotive suppliers as it moves to full production of its proprietary radar chipset.

“With the funds raised, Arbe will continue to deploy to the market a real breakthrough in radar technology that empowers Tier 1 automakers and OEMs to finally replace their legacy chipsets with one that truly meets the safety requirements of NCAP [Eurpean New Car Assessment Programme] and ADAS [advanced driver assistance] for years ahead,” stated Kobi Marenko, CEO of Arbe. “In fact, Arbe provides an affordable sensor for mass-market implementation that enables Level 3 autonomy without requiring lidar. Our technology is the essential component in achieving a fully autonomous vehicle that drives in every environment and weather condition.”

Another company working on 4D radar sensing is Vayyar Imaging Ltd., which raised $109 million in Series D financing in November.
