Registration opened today for Apple Camp, the free summer workshops inside Apple’s retail stores that help introduce kids to new ways they can express their creativity using the iPad and Mac.
Apple is adding robots to the mix.
Apple will run a “Coding Games and Programming Robots” course for the first time that will use software from Tynker to introduce concepts of block-based coding and will allow kids to program Sphero robots.
The kids will first learn basic coding concept using Tynker’s learning software, then they’ll apply what they learned to make Sphero robots move and light up.
Here’s the course description for Coding Games and Programming Robots: “Kids will learn visual block-based coding for games, applying logic skills such as pattern recognition and problem solving. Then they’ll use what they’ve learned to program their own robots to perform tasks, challenges, and much more.”
On the first two days children work on their projects and on the final day they come together to present their finished work.
Apple Camp offers two other courses that use iMovies and iBooks Author for filmmaking and interactive storytelling.
Courses at Apple Camp are free, but they’re available on a first-come, first-served basis. Apple once again expects 60,000 kids to participate in Apple Camp this year, so if you’re interested in sending your kids, you better sign them up soon.
