ABB deploys PixelPaint at Mercedes-Benz plant in Germany

Mercedes-Benz AG has deployed ABB Robotics’ PixelPaint technology at its Sindelfingen plant in Germany. The system complements the factory’s conventional painting processes by enabling the precise and efficient application of intricate paint designs.

ABB claimed that the technology is both sustainable and resource-saving. The company began operation in the facility earlier this year and has helped Mercedes-Benz adapt to its new personalized options for its most exclusive models.

“PixelPaint uses an award-winning paint head similar to an inkjet printer that can apply large areas of color as well as precise details with complete accuracy,” said Joerg Reger, managing director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line.

“In an entirely automated process that requires no manual intervention, the technology opens new possibilities for vehicle manufacturers as they look to increase personalization in response to rising consumer demand while also reducing emissions. We’re delighted to have been able to work with Mercedes-Benz to help them make these extraordinary design visions a reality.”

Mercedes offers unique designs with PixelPaint

PixelPaint consists of a paint head with more than 1,000 tiny, individually controlled nozzles, mounted on an ABB robot such as the IRB 5500 paint series. Combined with ABB’s 3D vision system and coordinated by its RobotStudio planning and programming software, the head tracks very closely to the vehicle body to ensure that 100% of the paint is applied to the car with no overspray or airborne misting.

This eliminates the need for labor-intensive masking and repeat trips through the paint shop, said the company. This results in zero waste, reduced environmental treatment requirements, and lower emissions overall, according to ABB.

The technology can recreate even the most intricate designs with unprecedented precision, it added. The 3D vision system enables a high degree of repeatability so that each painted panel appears identical to the next.

Mercedes-Benz will first use PixelPaint on the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series. To further enhance the exclusivity of this model, the obsidian black hood is available upon request with an intricate Maybach pattern in contrasting graphite grey. The automaker said this design would be impossible to achieve with a traditional process.

“With PixelPaint, we are setting a new benchmark in painting technology,” said Arno van der Merwe, head of production planning at Mercedes-Benz. “The combination of the highest design and quality precision with innovative technological solutions is a milestone for the painting of our top-end models at the Sindelfingen site. This forward-looking technology raises us to a new level in individual coatings. It enables exclusive product results for our demanding customers.”

ABB Robotics touts innovations

ABB’s other painting systems include the RB1000i-S digitally-enabled atomizer. The company said it can achieve up to 99% transfer efficiency, using less paint and materials. ABB said both systems are part of its goal to make manufacturers more sustainable, efficient, and competitive.

ABB’s product line includes a full range of industrial robots, collaborative robot arms, and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). In January 2025, it announced its “no-code” AppStudio for creating user interfaces and partnered with Agilent Technologies on laboratory automation.

In March, ABB launched the RoboMasters robot training tool, and last week, it upgraded its Flexly Mover AMR. ABB Robotics is one of the top RBR50 winners of all time, earning recognition every year in the innovation award’s history.

Last month, ABB Group announced that it would be spinning off its entire robotics division. It intends for the business to start trading as a separately listed company in the second quarter of 2026.
